INTERNSHIP

Congressional Intern for Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24)

I had the pleasure of serving as a Legislative Intern for Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson, representing Florida’s 24th congressional district. Throughout my internship, I was tasked with a variety of duties, including managing the daily press newsletter and drafting letters to congressional leadership. However, the most impactful experience I had throughout my internship consisted of my involvement in the “Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys Act” - H.R.1636. The goal of the commission is to study and make recommendations to address societal disparities that disproportionately affect Black males in America.

My role on the bill consisted of conducting research and executing outreach strategies to highlight the importance of the legislation. As a result, the bill was enacted into law with over 200 cosponsors and 19 supporting organizations. The bill is considered one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation that Congress has passed since the Voting Rights Act. I am immensely proud to have been a part of such a historic policymaking initiative. This experience not only provided me insight into how Congress operates, but also placed me in the position to directly help my community and enhance my global awareness. I hope to build on this experience and continue making an equitable change in my next career endeavors.
