LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE

 Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society

Pi Sigma Alpha is the National Political Science Honor Society, founded in 1920. My global learning journey with Pi Sigma Alpha began my Junior year in the Fall of 2019. I wanted to join an honor society that correlated with my major; however, it no longer existed on campus. After some research, I found out that FIU’s local chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha had been inactive for a few years. With the assistance of a few friends, we were able to reinstate the club, beginning my leadership journey with the organization.

Serving as the Vice-President of the organization, and evolving into the President, this experience shaped me into becoming a better leader. Throughout my time as a board member, I greatly developed my global awareness. From hosting debates that delved on key issues in domestic and foreign policy, to interacting with students and guest lecturers on global topics. These interactions allowed me to witness the interrelatedness of local, international, and intercultural issues. Not only did I learn about various issues, but I was placed in a position where I could learn from others and look at topics from multiple points of view, essentially becoming more well-rounded.

I learned that being a global leader is not about demanding change from a single perspective but rather using multiple approaches to achieve a common goal. Leadership is the art of motivating a group of individuals to act toward achieving a common goal. Real change cannot be accomplished without the assistance of others.
